How the Hell Did Black Friday Start Anyway?

Black FridayAllison Linn delves into the history of Black Friday, the notorious day after Thanksgiving when Americans work off their turkey-induced comas by hitting the malls. It’s hard to believe that the tradition to shop after Thanksgiving goes all the way back to the Great Depression and FDR.

“President Franklin Roosevelt was even pressured to move Thanksgiving back a week so retailers could enjoy a longer holiday shopping season, according to records in his presidential library.”

This year, nearly 50 percent of American households plan on braving the crowds to get at what’s seen as the best possible deals of the year, according to America’s Research Group.
